A brief history of our agency

At HandsUp Community Services Trust, we believe in providing a hand up, not a handout—empowering individuals and families to overcome challenges and build a strong foundation for their future.

Founded on the principles of support, advocacy, and resilience, HandsUp was established to assist the most vulnerble people in society- children.

We began with mums self referring for help to navigate through the complexities of government social services. Word got out and we began supporting children, youth and families who were navigating the justice system, social services, and life’s unexpected difficulties.

Our journey began when Sharon Clair, a seasoned advocate and community leader, was approached to support young people and their whānau facing judicial matters. What started as a commitment to a few soon grew into an extensive support network, with Sharon helping over 100 youth and their families through advocacy, mentoring, and practical assistance in our first year.

Today, HandsUp continues to stand by individuals and whānau, with a non judgemental attitude offering tailored support services, guidance, and connections to essential resources. We work alongside communities to foster self-determination, accountability, and long-term success for those in need.

At HandsUp, we don’t just provide assistance—we walk alongside those who seek a better path forward. If you or someone you know needs support, reach out—we’re here to help..

Understanding the Role of an Advocate

An advocate represents your interests, speaks on your behalf, and provides expert guidance. Choosing the right one ensures you receive the best support for your situation.

Identify Your Specific Needs

Before selecting an advocate, define your needs. Are you seeking legal representation, policy advocacy, or personal support? Understanding your requirements will help narrow down your choices.

Research Their Expertise

Not all advocates have the same skill set. Look for professionals with experience in your area of concern. Check their credentials, past work, and client testimonials to gauge their effectiveness.

Check Their Communication Skills

Effective advocacy requires strong communication. Ensure the advocate can articulate your position clearly, negotiate effectively, and provide regular updates.

Assess Their Reputation

Reputation speaks volumes about an advocate’s reliability. Look for reviews, case studies, and success stories. A well-respected advocate is more likely to achieve positive results.

Evaluate Their Approach and Values

Advocates have different strategies. Some focus on diplomacy, while others take an assertive stance. Choose someone whose approach aligns with your goals and values.

Consider Their Availability

Advocacy requires time and dedication. Ensure the advocate has the capacity to handle your case without being overloaded with other commitments.

Discuss Fees and Costs

Advocacy services come at different price points. Some work pro bono, while others charge hourly or fixed fees. Clarify costs upfront to avoid unexpected expenses.

Schedule an Initial Consultation

Before committing, arrange a consultation. This meeting will help you assess their suitability and comfort level in working with them.

Trust Your Instincts

Beyond qualifications and experience, trust your gut. If you feel confident and comfortable with an advocate, they’re likely a good fit.

Choosing the right advocate can significantly impact your case. Take the time to research and make an informed decision.

We hope this guide helps you in your search for the right advocate. If you need further assistance, feel free to reach out!
